Epoxy floors 101: from garage floor to "Ocean Floor"

Most people meet epoxy in a garage: a gray coating, a scatter of flakes, done. Then they see a floor poured to look like surf breaking over sand — like the "Ocean Floor" in our portfolio — and realize the same chemistry that protects a workshop can produce something you'd frame, if it weren't underfoot.

What epoxy actually is

Epoxy isn't paint. It's a two-part thermosetting resin — resin and hardener that, once mixed, cure into a plastic sheet chemically bonded to the concrete beneath. Done right, it's seamless, waterproof, chemical-resistant, and dramatically stronger than any coating from a can. Done wrong, it peels in sheets — and the difference is almost never the product. It's the floor prep.

How a floor really gets built

Grind, don't hope. Concrete arrives sealed by its own troweling, often contaminated by years of oil and silicone. We diamond-grind the surface to open its pores — the profile the resin needs to grip. Acid-etch kits from the hardware store are the reason most DIY epoxy fails.

Repair and test. Cracks are chased and filled, spalls patched, and the slab tested for moisture — coastal Santa Cruz County slabs frequently carry vapor pressure that will blister an unbreathing coating unless a moisture-mitigating primer goes down first.

Prime and build. A penetrating primer coat anchors the system, then the body coat carries the design: solid colors for commercial cleanliness, decorative flake broadcast to a full-coverage texture, quartz for grip, or the artistry tier — metallic pigments manipulated while wet with brushes, air, and gravity so the floor moves like water, smoke, or stone. That's the technique behind the Ocean Floor: pigment currents composed the way a painter composes a canvas, then locked in place as the resin cures.

Protect the art. A urethane or polyaspartic topcoat takes the abuse — UV, tires, chair legs, dropped tools — so the art layer never has to.

Where it belongs

Garages and workshops, yes — but also kitchens, laundry rooms, showrooms, restaurants, tasting rooms, and bathrooms, anywhere that wants a seamless surface that shrugs off water and cleans with a mop. Counters and tabletops take the same metallic systems at furniture scale. What it costs, honestly

A straightforward flake garage system and a hand-poured metallic art floor are different animals — in labor, in material, and in price. What they share is the prep, and that's the line item to interrogate in any bid (our guide to reading estimates applies double here). A floor is forever-ish: the cheap version costs more the day it peels.
